About

5AM Ventures

5AM Ventures is a Menlo Park-based life sciences venture capital firm founded in 2002 by Andrew Schwab and John Diekman. The firm specializes in seed and early-stage investments in biopharmaceuticals, drug delivery technologies, and life science instruments, and has spent more than two decades building a track record as a hands-on company builder in the life sciences industry. 5AM currently invests from two concurrent vehicles: Fund VII, a $450 million early-stage venture fund, and 5AM Opportunities II, a $300 million strategy investing in small and mid-cap public biotech and later-stage private companies. The firm also operates the 4:59 Initiative, an internal incubator that identifies and de-risks breakthrough science before it is ready for Series A financing. 5AM has backed 97 companies since inception, recording 27 IPOs and 31 acquisitions, reflecting the depth of its portfolio engagement. Partners regularly take short-term operating roles in portfolio companies, providing direct guidance on strategy, management team development, and clinical planning. The firm evaluates opportunities across multiple therapeutic areas, investing in innovative platform technologies, corporate spin-offs, and products with shorter development cycles. Beyond its core portfolio investments in Aceagen, Arcus Biosciences, Atara Biosciences, and Bicycle Therapeutics, the firm's broader portfolio includes Artiva Biotherapeutics, Entrada Therapeutics, Lifordi Immunotherapeutics, MapLight Therapeutics, Mendra, ProLynx, BigHealth, Audentes Therapeutics (acquired by Astellas in 2019), Calibrium (acquired by Novo Nordisk in 2015), and Fellow Health.
