American Express Ventures is the corporate venture capital arm of American Express, focused on early and growth-stage investments in financial technology companies that advance the strategic priorities of the American Express network. The fund operates from New York and typically invests at Series A and Series B stages with check sizes from approximately $2 million to $15 million, in companies developing innovations across payments infrastructure, merchant services, small business financial tools, data analytics, digital identity, and loyalty and rewards technology. As a corporate venture arm, American Express Ventures prioritizes strategic alignment: portfolio companies may benefit from commercial partnerships, distribution access through the American Express network of cardholders and merchant partners, and the insights of one of the world's largest and most globally recognized financial services brands. The fund has a track record of backing companies that later became influential in their categories. Plaid, the financial data connectivity network, received American Express Ventures backing before becoming the subject of a $5.3 billion Visa acquisition attempt, which was subsequently abandoned under antitrust pressure. iZettle, a European mobile point-of-sale payments company, was acquired by PayPal for approximately $2.2 billion in 2018. Kabbage, a small business lending and financial services platform that received American Express Ventures support, was acquired directly by American Express in 2020 for approximately $850 million, converting a portfolio company into a division of the parent company. Beyond Plaid, Kabbage, iZettle, and Marqeta, the fund's investment activity spans a broad range of fintech infrastructure, data, and commerce companies.
