Balderton Capital (Europe HQ)

Balderton Capital is a London-based venture capital firm founded in 2000 as Benchmark Capital Europe, the European arm of the legendary Sand Hill Road partnership, before the team completed a management buyout in 2007 and established Balderton as an independent firm. Today Balderton is one of Europe's most active and established venture capital investors, focused exclusively on European-founded technology companies from early seed stages through to growth, with the conviction that Europe can produce global technology category leaders without founders needing to relocate to Silicon Valley. The firm manages more than $5 billion in assets under management across nine funds and completed its largest fundraise in 2024 with Fund IX, which totalled approximately $1.3 billion split between a $400 million early-stage vehicle and a $900 million growth fund. Balderton invests across enterprise software, consumer technology, fintech, health technology, and deeptech, with particular strength in backing companies that intend to compete globally from European headquarters. The firm's investment track record includes some of the most significant European technology exits of the past two decades. Revolut, the UK neobank and global fintech, is among Balderton's most valuable active holdings. GoCardless, the bank payment network, is a portfolio company. Citymapper, the urban mobility app, was an early Balderton-backed company. The Hut Group, the British e-commerce and health and beauty conglomerate, completed an IPO on the London Stock Exchange in 2020 as one of the largest UK tech flotations. Farfetch, the luxury e-commerce platform, was an early portfolio company. Beyond its original investments in Revolut, GoCardless, Citymapper, and The Hut Group, the broader portfolio includes Depop (acquired by Etsy), Magic Pony Technology (acquired by Twitter), and dozens of active European software and consumer businesses.
