BBG Ventures, formally Built By Girls Ventures, is a New York-based pre-seed and seed venture capital firm founded in 2014 by Susan Lyne, former CEO of ABC Entertainment Group and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, and Nisha Dua, a media and technology operator and investor. The firm backs founding teams with at least one female or diverse founder, operating from the conviction that teams reflecting the demographics of the consumers they serve will systematically identify larger markets and build more defensible businesses than homogeneous founding teams. BBG focuses on consumer-facing businesses that address the spending, health, work, and lifestyle needs of the emerging majority of US consumers, including women, people of color, and the next generation of economically active Americans. The firm closed a $50 million Fund III in 2021, a significant expansion over its first two funds of $10 million each. BBG has made more than 100 investments across three funds, with nearly 68 percent of portfolio founders from non-white backgrounds. The firm is a pre-seed and seed specialist, typically writing initial checks from $500,000 to $1 million and taking lead or co-lead positions. Portfolio companies include Alloy, the financial identity and fraud prevention infrastructure platform; Ellevest, the women-first investment platform founded by Sallie Krawcheck; Maven Clinic, the digital women's and family health clinic; Zola, the wedding marketplace and registry platform; Spring Health, the employer mental health benefits platform; and Wingback, a B2B subscription management platform. Beyond these original investments, the portfolio spans consumer health, fintech, commerce, and enterprise SaaS.
