BGF, the Business Growth Fund, is the UK and Ireland's most active growth capital investor, established in 2011 as an initiative backed by the UK's five largest banks (Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Standard Chartered) in response to the recognised gap in patient growth capital for small and medium-sized UK businesses that had historically been underserved by traditional private equity and venture capital. The fund has committed more than £3 billion to over 400 companies across the United Kingdom and Ireland since its founding, making it one of the most prolific sources of institutional equity capital for British businesses outside of London. BGF operates a differentiated model: unlike traditional venture capital, it invests in established businesses with revenue, typically seeking minority stakes of 10 to 40 percent in companies that are profitable or near-profitable and growing, providing long-term patient capital without requiring founders to exit on a typical fund timeline. The firm manages a portfolio of more than 200 active companies across sectors including technology, consumer brands, healthcare, manufacturing, and business services, with offices throughout the UK and Ireland. Portfolio companies have included Gousto, the British recipe box delivery company; Monica Vinader, the UK accessible luxury jewellery brand; and Secret Escapes, the luxury travel membership platform. Beyond its original investments in Gousto, Monica Vinader, and Secret Escapes, BGF has backed companies spanning digital media, SaaS, specialty retail, and advanced manufacturing across the UK's regional economies.
