About

Buoyant Ventures

Buoyant Ventures is a Chicago-based climate technology venture capital firm focused on seed and Series A investments in companies using software, data, and digital intelligence to accelerate the energy transition and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with a particular emphasis on solutions that generate near-term, measurable impact rather than requiring long technology development timelines before commercial deployment. The firm was founded by Amy Francetic, a veteran of the clean energy ecosystem with deep roots in the Chicago and Midwest clean energy community, and is one of the few early-stage climate VCs with primary operations outside of Boston, San Francisco, or New York. Buoyant's investment thesis centers on a distinctive view within climate technology: that digital solutions, software platforms, and AI applications applied to the energy system, buildings, transportation, and industrial sectors can deliver significant emissions reductions today, before breakthrough hardware technologies reach commercial scale. This pragmatic orientation leads the firm to back companies in areas including grid optimization, building energy management, demand flexibility, carbon markets and accounting software, sustainable agriculture intelligence, and fleet electrification enablement. Initial investments from $1 million to $5 million at seed and Series A stages. Portfolio companies include AutoGrid, the AI-powered energy flexibility management platform acquired by Uplight in 2022; Kelvin, the smart building energy management platform; Leap, the distributed energy resource aggregation platform that connects energy assets to utility programmes; and Enverid, the air purification and energy efficiency company. Beyond its original investments, the portfolio spans climate software, energy intelligence, and digital solutions for the energy transition.
