Floodgate is a Palo Alto-based pre-seed and seed venture capital firm founded by Ann Miura-Ko and Mike Maples Jr., widely regarded as one of the most successful and highest-returning seed-stage venture capital funds in Silicon Valley, with a portfolio that includes several of the most consequential technology companies of the past two decades. The firm invests at pre-seed and seed stages with initial checks from $500,000 to $2 million and is famous for writing the first institutional checks into companies that others considered too early or too uncertain. Twitter, the social network acquired by Elon Musk for $44 billion in 2022, was a Floodgate-backed company. Lyft completed a Nasdaq IPO in 2019. Okta completed a Nasdaq IPO in 2017 and reached a peak market capitalization of over $45 billion. Twitch was acquired by Amazon for $970 million in 2014. Refinery29 was acquired by Vice Media in 2019. Beyond its original investments in Twitter, Lyft, Okta, Twitch, and Refinery29, the portfolio includes Bazaarvoice and dozens of additional consumer and enterprise technology companies.
