Forbion is a Naarden, Netherlands-based venture capital firm focused exclusively on life sciences, investing in seed through Series B stages in biopharmaceutical, medical technology, and therapeutics companies primarily in Europe and the United States. The firm was founded in 2006 by Geert-Jan Mulder, Sander Slootweg, and others who spun out of the venture activities of ABN AMRO Capital, and has grown into one of Europe's leading dedicated life sciences venture funds. Forbion applies deep scientific and clinical expertise across oncology, rare diseases, immunology, neurology, and metabolic diseases, investing with initial checks from $5 million to $25 million. The firm has particular strength in identifying drug candidates in academic laboratories across European universities and spinning them out into venture-backed companies. Portfolio companies include Acacia Pharma, the UK biopharmaceutical company focused on acute care; Galecto Biotech, the clinical-stage company developing galectin inhibitors; Novintum Bioscience; and uniQure, the Dutch gene therapy company that completed a Nasdaq IPO in 2014. Beyond its original investments, the portfolio includes additional European and US clinical-stage biopharmaceutical companies.
