Hatteras Venture Partners is a Durham, North Carolina-based seed and Series A venture capital firm focused on life sciences, investing in biopharmaceutical, medical device, and healthcare technology companies primarily emerging from the Research Triangle region of North Carolina, including Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and North Carolina State University, and from other academic and research institutions. The firm was founded with the conviction that North Carolina's extraordinary concentration of biomedical research talent is significantly underfunded by coastal venture capital concentrated in Boston and San Francisco, and that a specialist fund embedded in this ecosystem can identify breakthrough technologies before larger funds can access them. Hatteras invests with initial checks from $2 million to $10 million at seed and Series A stages. Portfolio companies include Cempra, the antibiotic drug developer; Inspire Medical Systems, the medical device company developing upper airway stimulation therapy for sleep apnea that completed a NYSE IPO in 2018; Liquidia Technologies, the precision biotherapeutics company that completed a Nasdaq IPO; and Nuo Therapeutics, a wound care company.
