Most cloud storage platforms do not notify you when someone downloads a file from a shared link. Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive each have limited native download tracking, and it is mostly available on business plans only. For personal Google accounts, Drive does not show download activity at all. The Activity Dashboard shows who viewed a native Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide while signed into Google, but it does not capture downloads and does not work for uploaded file types like PDFs or Word documents.
Google Workspace accounts get significantly more. Administrators can access Audit Logs in the Admin Console, which log file downloads, sharing events, and access activity with timestamps and user details. Pitchwise tracks downloads fully, across every file type, for every viewer regardless of whether they have an account. Every time someone opens a document you shared via Pitchwise's tracked link, the platform logs the open, the time spent on each page, and whether they downloaded it, alongside the exact timestamp and viewer identity.
The built-in audit log creates a permanent record of all document activity. For investor materials, proposals, or any file where you need to know whether the recipient actually engaged with what you sent, that level of detail is something the platforms above were not designed to provide.
Dropbox's Viewer Info feature, available on paid plans, shows who has previewed a file shared from your account. The important distinction: it tracks in-browser preview activity, not downloads. If someone downloads a file from a shared link without opening it in the browser first, that download does not appear in Viewer Info.
For Dropbox Business accounts, administrators can see team sharing activity in the admin panel under Activity. This gives a broader log of actions but is not designed for tracking how individual external recipients interact with a specific shared link.
Personal OneDrive accounts have no download tracking at all. The Details pane shows file activity including view events, but download actions are not captured for standard Microsoft accounts.
OneDrive for Business, accessed through Microsoft 365, does support audit logging through the SharePoint and OneDrive compliance centre. An administrator can run reports that include file download events with timestamps and user details. This is an enterprise feature and requires the right Microsoft 365 plan and admin access to configure.
