You sent the deck. You heard nothing. Now you are waiting, not knowing whether the investor read every slide, skimmed the first three, or never opened it at all. Here is how to get that visibility and what to do with it when you do.
The problem with sending a PDF
Most founders send pitch decks as email attachments. The deck lands in an investor's inbox as a static file, and from that moment, you have zero visibility. You cannot see whether it was opened, which slides held attention, whether it was forwarded to a partner, or whether the email was even read.
This matters more than most founders realise. DocSend's analysis of seed pitch decks shows that the average investor spends 3 minutes and 20 seconds reviewing a deck. Warm introductions produce significantly longer review times (around 4 minutes 18 seconds) versus cold outreach, which averages 2 minutes 31 seconds. In that narrow window, knowing whether you are getting a full read or a skim is intelligence that can change your follow-up strategy entirely.
The answer is not to send a better PDF. It is to stop sending PDFs.
How Pitchwise deck tracking works
When you share a pitch deck via Pitchwise, you replace the PDF attachment with a secure, trackable link. The investor clicks the link and views the deck in a clean browser interface — no download required, no special software. In the background, Pitchwise logs every interaction.
Here is what you can see from the moment you share:
- Whether and when the investor opened the link
- Total time spent on the document
- Time spent on each slide — the Page by Page Analytics chart
- Completion rate — how far through the deck they got
- Whether they returned for a second or third visit
- If email verification is enabled, the email of every viewer
This is available in the Analytics view for any deck shared from My Decks in the Pitchwise sidebar. The dashboard shows Visitors, Time Spent, Avg. Time, Downloads, and Completion Rate at a glance.

Setting up tracking: step by step
Step 1 — Upload your deck
From My Decks in the Pitchwise sidebar, upload your pitch deck. Pitchwise accepts PDF and PowerPoint formats. Once uploaded, your deck appears in the My Decks list.
Step 2 — Configure your access settings
Click the chain link icon next to Copy link to open the Manage Link Settings panel. This is where you choose how the link behaves:
- Email required — viewers must enter their email address before accessing the deck. Their email is captured but not verified. Use this for most investor outreach.
- Email verification — viewers receive a one-time passcode to their email before gaining access. Use this for later-stage diligence when you need a confirmed identity.
- No email required — fully anonymous viewing. Useful for early cold outreach where friction might deter opens.
For investor outreach, the email required is the default recommendation. You capture every viewer's identity, including anyone the deck is forwarded to, without creating friction.
Step 3 — Copy and share the link
Click the Copy link at the bottom of the Manage Link Settings panel. Paste this into your email instead of attaching the PDF. The investor experience is nearly identical to opening an attachment; they click a link and view the deck instantly.
Step 4 — Monitor engagement in real time
Return to My Decks and open the Analytics view for your deck. The Visitors tab shows every person who has opened the link, with their email address (if enabled), total time spent, and the date and time of each visit. The All Visits tab shows the full chronological log. The Page by Page Analytics chart shows a bar for every slide, with bar height representing time spent, giving you a precise picture of where attention is concentrated and where it drops off.
Reading the signals: what the data actually tells you
Tracking data is most useful when you know how to interpret it. Here is a practical framework:

The slide-level data is particularly revealing. Analysis shows that across funded company decks, the team slide and financials slide receive the longest view times, while product slides are processed most quickly. If your data shows the opposite pattern, as financial slides skimmed and the team slide lingered on, that tells you something specific about where this investor's concerns lie.
What about data rooms? Tracking investor access there too
As a raise progresses and an investor requests more detailed materials, the conversation moves from a single pitch deck to a structured data room, financials, cap table, legal documents, product details, and customer evidence. Pitchwise data rooms give you the same visibility at the room level.
How data room tracking works in Pitchwise
When you create a data room on Pitchwise and share it, you get the full Analytics view for the room. This shows:
- Every individual who has accessed the room, with their email and timestamp
- Which folders and documents did they open
- Time spent per document
- Return visits — how many times they came back and when
- The complete audit trail across all activity in the room
The Settings panel in a data room gives you control at the same level as a deck link. Under Permissions, you choose between Email required, Email verification (OTP), or Allow specific emails, the last of which restricts access to a named list of individuals only. Under Security, you control whether documents can be downloaded.
Why data room tracking changes the diligence dynamic
Most founders open a data room and then wait, uncertain whether the investor is actively reviewing or has gone quiet. Pitchwise analytics change that. If an investor has spent three sessions in your data room across two weeks, spending concentrated time in the financials and legal folders but not yet touching the product section, you have a precise picture of where they are in their process and what questions are likely to come.
If an investor who said they were reviewing has not opened the room in ten days, you know that too. That is not a panic signal; it might mean they are waiting for a partner to review alongside them, but it is information that changes how you approach the next touchpoint.

Frequently asked questions
Can investors tell they are being tracked?
They can see the deck is hosted on a platform rather than downloaded as a file, but they do not receive any notification about tracking. Pitchwise tracking is standard practice in modern fundraising — the same way website analytics are standard on every website. If an investor asks directly, be honest: most sophisticated investors understand and accept it.
What if the investor forwards the deck to someone else?
If you have enabled Email required access, any new viewer must enter their email address before viewing. That means when an investor forwards the link to a partner or associate, the new viewer's email address appears in your Visitors tab. You see that the deck has been shared internally — a strong signal of genuine consideration.
Can I track multiple investors sending the same deck?
Yes. Each link you copy from Pitchwise tracks all viewers independently in the Visitors tab. If you share the same link with ten investors, you see each viewer's engagement separately — there is no need to create separate links per investor, though you can if you want isolated tracking per contact.
What is the difference between Email required and Email verification?
'Email required' collects a viewer's email address before they can access the deck but does not confirm they control that address. Email verification sends a one-time passcode to the email address entered, confirming the viewer controls it. For early outreach, an email is sufficient. For later-stage diligence where identity matters, use Email verification.
Does Pitchwise tracking work for data rooms as well as individual decks?
Yes — data rooms have Analytics view as individual deck links, with per-document and per-folder engagement tracking, individual visitor identity logs, and a full audit trail.
