How to See if a Client Downloaded Your Contract

by
Oluwadamilare Akinpelu

You sent the contract an hour ago. Your inbox is quiet. You have no way of knowing whether the client has seen it, downloaded it, or moved it to their trash. This is one of the most common friction points in freelance and consulting work, and it is almost entirely solvable with the right approach.

The short answer: yes, you can tell if a client opened or downloaded your contract. With the right tool you can see much more than that, including which pages they spent time on and whether they reached the signature section.

Can you see if a client downloaded your contract?

You can, but the answer depends on how you sent it. If you sent the contract as a raw PDF attachment, you have no visibility unless you add a tracking layer. If you shared it as a link through a cloud storage service or document tracking platform, you can see view events, time spent, and, in some cases, page-level analytics.

The key is the delivery method, not the document itself. A PDF is just a file. A tracked link wraps that file in a layer that logs every access event.

Download vs. open vs. view: why the distinction matters

These three words sound similar but measure different things, and conflating them leads to poor decisions about when to follow up.

A download means the client saved a copy of the file to their device. It does not confirm they opened it. Many email clients automatically download attachments in the background without the recipient ever touching them.

An 'open' or 'view' means the file was actually rendered and seen. If you share via a tracked link, a view event fires when the document loads in the client's browser.

Page-level analytics go one level deeper: they show which pages were viewed, how long the client spent on each, and whether they reached the end. For a contract, this tells you whether they got to the payment terms or the signature page, not just whether they opened the cover.

For practical follow-up purposes, a page-level view is the most actionable signal. Knowing they downloaded the file tells you almost nothing. Knowing they spent four minutes on pages 4 and 5 and then stopped tells you exactly where the friction might be.

Method 1: PDF tracking links (recommended: Pitchwise)

Upload your contract PDF to a document tracking tool, and it generates a shareable link. When the client opens the link, you see the event in real time plus full page-level analytics: which pages they read, how long they spent on each one, and exactly when they closed the document.

Pitchwise is the strongest option for this. Upload your contract, copy the tracking link, and send it in place of a raw PDF attachment. When your client opens it, you get a real-time notification. The analytics panel shows time spent per page, whether they reached the payment terms or signature section, and when they dropped off. No client login is required; the document opens directly in their browser. See how Pitchwise works for document tracking.

This approach works regardless of the client's email client, operating system, or device. The tracked link can be pasted into any email, Slack message, or proposal; the client clicks it like any normal link, and you get visibility they would have no way of knowing you have.

Method 2: e-signature platforms with built-in tracking

Another approach is sending your contract through an e-signature platform that includes document analytics as part of the signing workflow. When you share the document, the platform generates a tracked link. You are notified when it is opened, how long each page was viewed, and when it is signed. These platforms maintain a full audit trail because a legally enforceable electronic signature requires one.

This method gives you the most complete picture because the document never exists as a downloaded file on the client's device. It lives in the browser, and every interaction is logged automatically. The downside is that the client must open the document through the platform's interface. Most clients accept this without friction, but some prefer working with local files.

Method 3: shared link tracking via cloud storage

If you store your contract in Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive and share a link rather than an attachment, the cloud platform logs access events. In Google Drive, you can view file activity by opening the document and checking the activity panel, which shows when it was last accessed and by which account.

Limitations: Google Drive shows access events only for people who are logged into a Google account when they open the link. A client who opens the link without being logged in will not appear in the log. These platforms give you a basic signal, but they are not reliable enough for follow-up decisions on time-sensitive contracts. For a deeper look at what Google Drive actually reveals, see how to see if someone opened a Google Drive link.

Method 4: email-level tracking

Email tracking tools fire a pixel when the recipient opens the email itself. This tells you whether your email was opened, not whether the contract attachment was downloaded or read. For specifics on what email-level tracking can and cannot tell you about attachments, see how to see if someone opened your email attachment.

The most useful application of email tracking for contracts is the negative case: if email tracking shows the email was never opened after 48 hours, your follow-up is not "did you review the contract?" but "did you receive my email?"

Comparison: what each method tells you

Method Opened? Pages viewed? Time spent? Real-time? Client login?
Pitchwise Yes Yes Yes Yes No
Cloud link (Google Drive, etc.) If logged in No No No Yes (Google account)
E-signature platform Yes Yes Maybe Yes No
Email tracking pixel Email only No No Yes No

What to do when they opened it but have not replied

Seeing a view event is useful, but it is not a signal to follow up immediately. Wait at least 24 hours after a view before reaching out. If the analytics show they spent significant time on multiple pages, they are engaging carefully and may be reviewing terms. A premature follow-up can come across as pressure.

If the data shows they opened the document, spent 30 seconds on page 1, and closed it, that is worth acting on faster. They may have been interrupted, or something on the first page stopped them.

Frame your follow-up around what the data suggests, not around what you saw. "I wanted to check if you had any questions about the terms" works better than referencing that you saw them open it.

If you are also a founder who sends pitch decks to investors, the same problem applies at a higher-stakes level. Pitchwise is built for that use case: you share your deck as a tracked link, receive a real-time notification when an investor opens it, and can see which slides they spent the most time on and where they dropped off. The follow-up logic is identical to what this article describes; you use the engagement data to decide when to reach out and what to say, not just the fact that time has passed. See how to know if an investor has opened your pitch deck and how to apply that in a live fundraise.

FAQ

Can I track a PDF I sent as an email attachment?

Not directly. The reliable approach is to share the contract as a tracked link rather than an attachment. Upload it to a document tracking tool or e-signature platform and share the generated link in place of the raw file.

Does Google Drive tell you if someone downloaded a file?

Google Drive's activity panel shows when a signed-in user accessed a file. It does not cleanly distinguish downloads from browser views, and it only logs activity from authenticated users. If a client opens the link without being logged into a Google account, their access will not appear.

Is it legal to track whether someone opened my contract?

Yes. Tracking document views and opens is standard practice and covered by the terms of service of platforms that provide it. You are tracking your own document. There is no legal requirement to disclose view tracking to recipients, though e-signature platforms typically note in their interface that the document is being tracked as part of the audit trail.

What is the best free option for contract tracking?

Google Drive with a shared link provides basic access data for free, as long as both parties are logged into Google. For page-level analytics without login requirements, most dedicated tracking tools offer a free tier covering a limited number of documents or monthly views.

Do e-signature platforms always track document opens?

Yes, for most platforms. The view event is part of the legally required audit trail for electronic signatures. If you are already using a platform for e-signatures, the tracking data is usually available in the analytics or activity section of each sent document.
